Turning Mud Street into Main Street

Teacher: Steve Black

Students at Mount Albion Elementary School have proposed transforming Mud Street; a busy vehicular artery lined with large setbacks big box stores and landfill sites into a pedestrian friendly street.

Using only the deep set back of green space between the street and existing structures along Mud Street at the intersection of Paramount, students lined the site with small businesses and community amenities. The street is now easily accessed by foot, bicycle and transit.

Playing off the adjacency to the landfill sites shipping containers were used by some students as a module for designing buildings and exploring adaptive reuse.
